On Thursday, November 16 at 6pm at City Hall, the Planning Board is holding a public hearing on a development proposal for Assembly Square. As folks who've followed this issue know, the quality and scale of development at Assembly Square looms large in Somerville's future, in terms of critically needed commercial property tax revenues, open space along the Mystic River, creation of a new Orange Line T stop, creation of new jobs, management of traffic and pollution and their impact on East Somerville, and unlocking the potential for becoming one of the most important mixed use developments in Massachusetts, if not New England.

On Monday, November 20 at 6pm in the Public Safety Building (220 Washington St.), the City will be hosting a Community Workshop on zoning changes proposed for Union Square. As the long-awaited Green Line extension becomes a more realistic possibility, and as the City proceeds with efforts to spark the revitalization of Union Square as a cultural and more exciting commercial/mixed use destination, housing activists are taking steps to address the inevitable displacement that will occur in the wake of escalating property values.

The Affordable Housing Organizing Committee will be seeking a zoning amendment to ensure and incentivize the creation of affordable housing so that Somerville's families don't get left out of Union Square's future.
