PDS Endorses Marty Martinez for Somerville Alderman-at-Large

Somerville, MA February 27, 2007 In its monthly Tuesday meeting, The Progressive Democrats of Somerville (PDS) endorsed Marty Martinez for Alderman-at-Large.

"I am proud and honored to have received the endorsement of The Progressive Democrats of Somerville," said Marty. "PDS shares my vision of a Somerville where every child has the opportunity to succeed, where we live in a more affordable community, and where local government is open and responsive to all."

"Marty will be a truly independent voice on the Board of Aldermen," said PDS chair Katie Wallace. "Our endorsement reflects Marty's history of progressive leadership, and the commitment he's made to improving the accessibility and responsiveness of government for our diverse community."

Born and raised in a working class family, Marty Martinez is one of the first in his family to go to college and attend graduate school. His involvement with the Somerville community has included working with youth around violence prevention, advocating for affordable family housing, and confronting and combating substance abuse issues.

Applications for endorsement by PDS were distributed electronically to the three declared candidates, Martinez, Jack Connolly, and Robert Daut. Martinez and Connolly submitted applications, which were then distributed to PDS members via the group's email list. The vote was held among all eligible PDS members who attended the Tuesday meeting.

The Progressive Democrats of Somerville (PDS) is a group of concerned Democrats from Somerville who organize to support Progressive Democratic candidates and elected officials, and become an effective force in local government. The group's impressive list of electoral successes includes State Senator Pat Jehlen, State Reps Denise Provost and Carl Sciortino, as well as several Somerville aldermen and School Committee members.
